SUBJECT + VERB + COMPLEMENT
Every sentence in English follows a certain pattern.
There are several sentence patterns in English. A decent understanding of these
structures will help you to express your ideas in several different ways.
SUBJECT
The subject in a sentence or clause is the person or
thing doing, performing, or controlling the action of the verb.
Example :
Her
Mother is a nurse.
Her Mother is the subject of the sentence
His
eyes
are beautiful.
His eyes is the subject of the sentence
Her
dreams have come true.
Her dreams is the subject of the sentence
VERB
A verb describes what a person or thing does or what
happens. For example, verbs describe:
an action – run, hit, travel.
an event – rain, occur.
a situation – be, seem, have.
a change – become, grow, develop.
Example :
She feels sick.
Feels is the verb of the sentence
Meli walked to
school.
Walked is the verb of the sentence
The chicken strutted across
the road.
Strutted is the verb of the sentence
COMPLEMENT
A complement is the part
of a Sentence that comes after the VERB and is needed to make the sentence
complete.
Example :
I go to the library everyday.
Evereyday is the complement of the
sentence
She was angry.
Angry is the complement of the
sentence
It seems absurd.
Absurd is the complement of the
sentence
